The Women In History Might Also Agree

Today, being a woman is packed with celebration, inspiration, and a multitude of “character building moments” that shape our identities and experiences. This vibrant tapestry of womanhood is woven from threads of resilience, creativity, and strength, reflecting the diverse journeys that women undertake in various contexts around the globe. However, it should come as no surprise that this rich experience is often accompanied by challenges and obstacles, as life is anything but a straight line. The path of womanhood is filled with twists and turns, each moment contributing to the growth and evolution of one’s character and perspective.

As we reflect on this dynamic existence, the women in history might also agree with this sentiment, recognizing the struggles and triumphs that have defined their own lives. From the suffragettes who fought tirelessly for the right to vote to the trailblazers in science, art, and politics, each generation of women has faced unique circumstances that have shaped their identities and societal roles.

Because it’s International Women’s Month, I’ve taken the time to contemplate deeply what I would ask women from a different time, women who have paved the way for the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy today. Initially, the first thoughts that came to mind were somewhat superficial in nature, reflecting on the societal norms and expectations of femininity that prevailed in their eras.

In your time, what did it mean to be a lady? What were the characteristics and behaviours that defined a woman’s role in society? What pressures did you face to conform to specific ideals of beauty, decorum, and propriety? These questions seemed valid, yet they only skimmed the surface of the profound experiences these women must have encountered.

Then, I thought more introspectively, considering the deeper implications of their existence. No, maybe I’d ask them what were the most important issues of their time. What struggles did they endure in the face of societal constraints? How did they navigate the complexities of gender inequality, economic hardship, or social justice? What were the pivotal moments that galvanized their communities and inspired change? These inquiries began to reveal the layers of resilience and determination that characterized their lives.

But then I thought even clearer, realizing that perhaps the most enlightening questions would be centered around their personal journeys. I would ask them about the dreams they held close to their hearts and the sacrifices they made in pursuit of those aspirations. What lessons did they learn through adversity? How did they find strength in solidarity with other women? What legacy did they hope to leave for future generations? These reflections would not only honour their struggles but also celebrate their triumphs, creating a bridge between past and present that empowers us all.

In a world that continuously honors and questions traditional gender roles,

equality, and diversity, what is the key lesson or value to embrace?

Perhaps, historical women might suggest that, similar to life, there is no

single answer to this question. Moreover, the response will largely depend on one’s capacity to consistently and persistently pursue growth.
